Umbul Ponggok, located on Jalan Delanggu-Polanharjo in Ponggok Village, Polanharjo District, Klaten Regency, Central Java, is renowned for its water tourism, featuring crystal-clear natural springs. The name "Ponggok" originates from Javanese, meaning "center" or "source," often associated with water. It was once unimaginable that this spring would become the primary water source for sugarcane plantations and sugar factories in the Polanharjo, Karanganom, and Ceper areas during the forced cultivation system (Cultuurstelsel) introduced by the Dutch colonial government in 1830. The Ponggok sugar factory was established in the 1880s but experienced decline in the 1930s due to war, economic instability, and socio-political crises, eventually ceasing operations. Despite this, the water from Umbul Ponggok continues to serve as a vital resource for irrigation in agriculture and as a drinking water supply for local residents.

Over time, the community and village government recognized the potential of spring tourism. As a result, the site was developed into a water tourism destination through the 2007 RPJMDes under the leadership of Village Head Junaedhi Hadimulyono, S.H. Gradually, Ponggok Village transitioned from an agricultural village to a tourism-oriented one. This transformation made Ponggok Village one of the richest villages in Indonesia by 2015. The effective utilization of Village Funds played a crucial role in driving economic growth. The village's annual income surged from IDR 80 million to IDR 3.9 billion, while revenue from BUMDes reached IDR 14 billion per year. These profits were reinvested into various sectors, primarily health and education, to improve the welfare of the Ponggok community.

This development caught the attention of Stube HEMAT, which brought several students to Umbul Ponggok to directly observe its water tourism management. Located in the middle of a densely populated area, Umbul Ponggok’s management collaborated with nearby residents, village authorities, and schools to optimize available yards as parking spaces for visitors’ vehicles. The tourism sector has absorbed a significant portion of the local workforce, including parking attendants, ticket sellers, and UMKM vendors operating both inside and outside the Umbul Ponggok area. Additionally, photographers and diving instructors have found opportunities here. Even a siomay seller interviewed in the area reported earning a daily turnover of IDR 2 million. Although Umbul Ponggok is considered a regional-standard tourist destination in terms of capacity, facilities, and maintenance, it still attracts visitors from various regions and provinces. Activities such as snorkeling, diving, and underwater photography are major attractions. The clear waters and diverse fish species create a stunning underwater experience, despite the pool being only 1.6 to 2.6 meters deep. Unsurprisingly, Umbul Ponggok can welcome up to 5,000 tourists per day on weekends and holidays.

The success of Umbul Ponggok must be accompanied by proper maintenance of its supporting tourism facilities. Key aspects to consider include cleanliness, waste management, bathroom optimization, slippery pool edges, rusted upper platforms, and ensuring comfort in every corner of the rest area. Additionally, the levels of fish food pellets in the water must be carefully monitored, as excessive amounts can lead to pollution and impact the comfort of visitors who swim. Despite these concerns, Umbul Ponggok serves as a valuable reference for regional development and can inspire Stube HEMAT students participating in field exposure. ***
